Phase 1 — Dock-cast gravity-base foundations
Borrowing from lighthouse construction
The foundation solution was reportedly based on established lighthouse construction logic. Large-diameter, self-weight-stabilised concrete gravity-base foundations were cast in an artificial dock built nearby, rather than fabricated offshore or piled into the seabed.
Phase 2 — Float-out and progressive ballasting
Settling under increasing weight
The dock was flooded, and each foundation was floated out to its position and progressively ballasted until it settled onto the prepared seabed under its own increasing weight — a method requiring no piling equipment or offshore heavy lift vessel.
Phase 3 — Turbine base and erection
Mobile cranes, no purpose-built vessel
A concrete slab was cast on top of each settled foundation to form the turbine base, and the 11 Bonus B35/450 turbines were erected using mobile cranes — there was no purpose-built offshore wind installation vessel in 1991 to do the job instead.

No offshore wind installation playbook, no jack-up fleet, no precedent — Vindeby's foundation logic came from lighthouses, not from any wind industry that existed yet.

Vindeby operated for 25 years, several years beyond its original design horizon, before decommissioning in 2017.
